Roger Federer wins Wimbledon 2009, 15th Grand Slam record
Jul 6th
The Wimbledon 2009 men’s final was an epic battle, and Roger Federer almost lost it. In the end, he mustered enough grit to beat Andy Roddick after four agonizing hours and
claimed his sixth All England championship. More importantly, Federer broke Pete Sampras’ Grand Slam record and established a new one, fifteen titles.
The match was torture of fans of either player. Though I said in an earlier post that I was rooting for Andy, I ended up rooting for Roger Federer. And that’s where the agony was for me. Andy Roddick dominated the match. His shots were sharp, his serves booming. He mixed his shots and never gave Federer a chance to beak his game until that fateful final service game that ended his dream. Roddick won the first set and was leading 6-2 in the second set tie break only to have the Swiss champion claw his way back and snatch the set from him. The third set ended in a tie break as well as both players matched each other’s shots and determination. But it was the fifth set that was the most taxing, ending in a score of 16-14.
At several points in the final set I thought Andy Roddick would win. He seemed more in control with his booming serves, ground strokes and volleys. Roger, on the other hand, seemed nervous, missing easy shots that used to be routine for him. At some point in the final games of the match I turned the television off. I couldn’t handle it. I couldn’t bear to watch Roger lose another epic battle like last year. I only went back to watching it after I knew the result online.
Andy Roddick was visibly distraught. He gave it his all but still came up short. However, Andy Roddick should realize that he amazed millions of us all over the world with what he showed us today on Center Court. There will be other opportunities for him. And with his new-found game, he will definitely win another Grand Slam title soon.
Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time. There should be no question about it now. He has demonstrated not only his skill with this match. What we saw was the character of a real champion.

Wimbledon men’s final 2009 video: Federer vs Roddick highlights
Jul 6th
The 2009 Wimbledon men’s singles final (video replay/highlights below) between Roger Federer and Andy Roddick is being talked about. More than twelve hours after the epic battle, many fans of both players just can’t believe what happened, how it all unfolded.
Roger Federer won the Wimbledon 2009 men’s title by beating Andy Roddick in a classic match described by many as probably the best in recent years. It has even surpassed the epic fight of last year when Rafael Nadal denied Federer a record-setting sixth straight Wimbledon title.
Many of us feel sorry for Andy Roddick. He gave everything to win his second Grand Slam but still came up short. In fact, he dominated the game, denying the Swiss champion a break until the decider. But the true champion that Roger is hung in there and kept his composure, and that proved to be what gave him the win. His perseverance and determination paid off. If only both could be given the title that’s what should have been done, because Roddick’s performance was well worthy of it.
There were times when I couldn’t watch the Wimbledon 2009 men’s final coverage. The tension was too much for me especially during the fifth set tie-break. I turned the set off several times and only returned after I knew the results from online live blogs. It’s a good thing video replays / highlights are available. For those of you who didn’t watch this classic battle. here are a few videos I found online.

Wimbledon finals 2009: Federer vs Roddick Wimbledon final
Jul 5th
Roger Federer vs Andy Roddick 2009 Wimbledon men’s singles final. Who would have thought this would be the match up for Wimbledon 2009. A month ago, everyone would have said a Nadal vs Federer match would be likely. Two weeks ago, Murray replaced Nadal on the predictions when the latter pulled out due to injury. But Roddick? Wasn’t he written off as early as last year in any Grand Slam final?
Roger Federer again demonstrated his mastery of the game against Tommy Haas in the semis. The fluidity of movement was back, and so was
the magic touch. The win at Roland Garros must have given him the confidence to play like this again, like the old master that he was before he started losing to Rafael Nadal last year. After the first set with Haas, where Roger won in a tie break, everybody knew it was only a matter of time before the Swiss tennis ace would formally reserve his place on Sunday’s Center Court match up.
In contrast, many weren’t sure about Andy Roddick. Not even after he beat come-backing former champion Leyton Hewitt in the quarters. Everybody was expecting a Murray win. However, with his new coach, improved ground strokes and volleys, new-found determination and stamina, Andy Roddick showed everyone that he should not be written in Grand Slams yet. He was 2-6 against the Briton in their match ups so far but he match Murray’s every point, every rally, every winner. He won the big points, and held his ground in the tie breaks. The British crowd was stunned as he beat their hope of a men’s singles crown last won by a Briton in 1936. Roddick was stunned as well, and as he took his bow he even seemed apologetic. But deep inside he knew his hard work has paid off.
Wimbledon 2009 men’s final video replay / highlights
I have always been a Roger Federer. I cried when he cried and jumped for joy in his many triumphs. But if he loses on Sunday in the 2009 Wimbledon final I won’t feel bad. I may even cheer for Roddick during the game, for I know that he deserves to win another Grand Slam. And a Wimbledon title will more than make up for his disappointments in the past.

Andy Roddick beats Murray for 2009 Wimbledon finals glory
Jul 4th
It will be a Federer vs Roddick Wimbledon 2009 final after Andy Roddick beat Andy Murray a few minutes ago with a score of 6-4 4-6 7-6 7-6. The score says it all. It was an exciting match from the first serve up to the last point with both players giving their best for a finals berth against Roger Federer. And when the last point was won by Roddick, the stunned British audience couldn’t do anything but stand up and clap. This was not the result they were expecting.
All throughout the past week and a half, the British were hoping for a Federer vs Murray final.
In fact, the media had all but crowned Andy Murray champion even before this semifinal match. However, it was not to be. On the other hand, nobody gave Andy Roddick a chance. He was regarded as a has-been in tennis terms, his best years gone and with no chance for a Grand Slam final much less a championship. But he proved them wrong today.
Andy Roddick may have played his best tennis in Wimbledon so far. His huge serves and power forehands didn’t leave him today. Even his sliced backhand was up to par. And he used all of these weapons to tame Murray who must have had so much pressure on his shoulders that it contributed to his loss. Murray was also brilliant today. But Andy Roddick matched his every shot and put in some more.
This changes everything for me in the finals. I am a Federer fan through and through, and I was hoping for him to win his 15th Grand Slam. However, my sentiments are for Andy Roddick in the Wimbledon finals on Sunday. He deserves another Grand Slam win, and a Wimbledon title would be great.

watch Wimbledon semifinals live | 2009 Wimbledon TV coverage
Jul 3rd
Now that the ladies’ Wimbledon semifinals is over, it’s time for the men. Watch the 2009 Wimbledon semifinals live TV coverage at the sources provided below and see who will advance to the finals on Sunday. But first let me give you some insights.
As predicted, it will be another all-Williams final on the ladies’ side of the draw this weekend as Serena and Venus Williams vanquished their respected foes though is dissimilar fashions. Elena Dementieva had a very good chance to beat Serena Williams in the first semifinals match. It was a different Serena
that we saw especially in the first half of the match. Gone was the invincible stance, the menacing posture. On the other hand, Dementieva came to the match armed with a vastly improved service game and better ground strokes. However, she lost the big points and let Williams into the match when she had several chances to defeat her. As such, Serena eked out a win for another finals appearance. Later, sister Venus destroyed world number 1 Dinara Safina in what is probably the worst defeat for a reigning number 1 ever, going down 6-1, 6-0 to Williams.
The men’s semifinals later today will pit hometown hope Andy Murray against a resurgent Andy Roddick and Roger Federer against Tommy Haas. The battle of the two Andys will be the more anticipated match as Britain is pinning its hopes of a championship on Murray it last won in 1936. Hope Roddick can stop him. The Federer-Haas match is by no means less exciting knowing how the German is a dangerous opponent who may surprise the Swiss ace.

2009 Wimbledon swine flu AH1N1 scare: 3 players affected
Jul 1st
The 2009 Wimbledon championships has been hit by the swine flu AH1N1 virus. This was revealed recently as three male players have shown swine flu symptoms and have tested positive for the AH1N1 virus. However, authorities said the three are getting better.
The virus scare was revealed earlier this week after several ball boys and ball girls have shown flu-like symptoms and were advised to stay home. Later, it was revealed that three male doubles players have shown the same symptoms and have subsequently tested positive. They are world number 29
doubles player Michal Mertinak, his fellow Slovakian, world number 22 Filip Polasek, and 25th-ranked American Travis Parrott. According to the the Daily Mail, Mertinak and Polasak were sharing a hotel room in London for the tournament while Parrott was Polasek’s doubles partner. The three have lost in the early rounds of the tournament.
No other players have tested positive for the virus so far but Wimbledon organizers are taking precautionary measures to avert an outbreak. Anti-bacterial wipes have been issued to all participants and staff and procedures for the disposal of used towels have been reiterated. In the closed confines of the locker rooms, the virus will likely spread if everyone will not be careful.
The men’s singles quarterfinals are due today while the ladies’ semis will start tomorrow. The swine flu scare is not expected to affect the tournament at this stage.

Wimbledon 2009 results: Leyton Hewitt upsets Del Potro
Jun 25th
Leyton Hewitt has caused the biggest in Wimbledon so far this year, beating Juan Martin del Potro in straight sets with a score of 6-3 7-5 7-5. Del Potro, seeded number 5 at the tournament, was seen as somewhat of a threat to Roger Federer’s sixth title quest this year, along with Andy Murray. However, Hewitt, a former Wimbledon champion himself, had other plans.
Right from the start, the Australian some have nicknamed “the mongrel” because of his scrappy play, dictated the play. He was his old self on Centre Court running after every ball and making
his opponent earn points rather than giving it to them for free through errors. And, taking advantage of del Potro’s height, he used more of his sliced returns to make the ball bounce low. The strategy payed off as the Argentinian had a hard time across the net. True, he showed flashes of brilliance with booming returns and played the lines with his huge serves but Leyton’s scrappy play dictated almost every point.

Andy Murray in Fred Perry retro outfit for Wimbledon 2009 (pics)
Jun 23rd
Andy Murray begins his quest for Wimbledon 2009 glory in retro outfits from Fred Perry (photos below). Ironically, the British hope for an elusive crown last won by a Briton in 1936 will be wearing outfits designed by a company named after the last British man who won it, Fred Perry. Will this increase his good luck and thus increase his chances of winning the Wimbledon 2009 men’s singles crown? We’ll find out in the coming days.
The British have good reason to have high hopes for Andy Murray. He is at his highest ranking in his career, world number 3, and with Rafael
Nadal out of the tournament due to injury, he is the second favorite among the men to win the title. Roger Federer still holds the top spot. However, Murray has beaten Federer in most of their recent encounters, and with the home crowd behind him, the Scot may well do it again this time if they meet in the finals.

Roger Federer has always set Wimbledon fashion in the past years. His blazers and jackets designed by Nike were always a fashion statement at the tournament. This year, he again debuted a new outfit punctuated by a military inspired Wimbledon 2009 jacket at his opening match yesterday. Today, Andy Murray will have his chance to show off his. It’s a retro ensemble – traditional unlike the modern design of Federer’s. Some say it’s boring, other say it’s just appropriate for the championship. Whatever it is, we hope it will bring him luck this year.

Wimbledon 2009 TV schedule Australia: LIVE TV coverage
Jun 21st
Looking for the Wimbledon TV schedule 2009 for Australia? The LIVE coverage from the All England Club starts Monday is what promises to be another exciting two-week championship.
The biggest Grand Slam of the season starts in a few hours with a field of tennis players each seeking to bring home the most-coveted trophy in the sport. Who will win this year? The women’s side, though lacking a dominant force the past seasons, has a roster of talented players – some seeking to add to their past Wimbledon glory and others seeking
their first. The Williams sisters look strong as ever with Venus seeking to prolong her reign as the queen of the All England Club with a possible sixth (and third consecutive) crown. Younger sister Serena looks as fierce as ever, ready to avenge her loss to older sister Venus last year. Svetlana Kuznetsova, on the other hand, would just love to win here too after conquering the clay courts of Roland Garros barely two weeks ago. And then there’s Dinara Safina, the current world number 1 and winless in Grand Slam singles as of yet despite several finals appearances. Will Safina win this year? There only one way top find out and that’s by watching the live television (TV) coverage of Wimbledon 2009. The Australian TV schedule is posted below.

It’s the men’s side which become more exciting for Wimbledon 2009. Will Roger Federer win Wimbledon and eclipse Pete Sampras’ record for the most Grand Slam wins? After winning the French Open earlier, the Swiss ace seems to be on another gear as he tries to recoup his All England glory doused by Rafael Nadal last year. With Nadal out due to injury, Federer is the top sentimental favorite. But British hope Andy Murray seems all set to fight for the crown last won by British man in 1936.
