ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With snow piled up waist- and shoulder-high in communities downwind of the Great Lakes, Annette Miller took her usual walk in the woods with her golden retriever Wednesday in search of the solitude and vigor the season offers in spades in upstate New York.”I love every mood of winter,” the 61-year-old retired businesswoman said after tramping for nearly an hour along the Lake Ontario shore in suburban Rochester. “You adjust to it. Snow Storm Sets Records: Blizzard Smothers East Coast With Snow
PHILADELPHIA � Utility crews rumbled along icy roads working to restore power to more than 100,000 customers from Virginia to New Jersey and snowbound airports resumed limited operations Thursday, a day after a powerful storm disrupted the lives of 50 million people from the southern plains up through the East Coast. Many schools systems in the path of the storm remained closed for a second day, including in Baltimore and Philadelphia, although New York City school children headed back to class after only their third snow day in six years. In Washington, D.C., the federal government was closed for a fourth straight day. The nation’s capital joined Philadelphia and Baltimore in logging their snowiest winters in history. Paul Kocin, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Washington, D.C., said the storm compares to some of the greatest ever largely because of its timing. He estimated 50 million people were affected. “The big difference is that it occurred within a week and a half of three other storms,” Kocin said. The combination of storms is almost unprecedented – the amount of snow, the amount of impact.” The latest storm dumped nearly 16 inches in Philadelphia and about 20 inches in central New Jersey. Totals ranged from 10 to 16 inches around New York City. Yue-Chung Siu, 25, got up early to be at work at his family’s bagel store in Philadelphia by 5:30 a.m. Thursday.

HAMPTON, N.H. � An unceasing winter storm unleashed multiple dangers across the Northeast on Friday, blasting the coast with hurricane-force winds that fanned a hotel fire, flooding parts of Maine, dropping 2 feet of snow on parts of New York, and cutting power to at least 700,000 homes and businesses. Power failures were so bad in New Hampshire that even the state Emergency Operations Center was operating on a generator. The highest wind reported was 91 mph in Portsmouth, N.H. – well above hurricane force of 74 mph. Gusts hit 60 mph or more from New York’s Long Island to Massachusetts. Public Service of New Hampshire, the state’s largest utility, reported power cut to at least 237,000 homes and businesses and said it would take days before everyone’s lights flickered back on. New York had more than 220,000 customers without power, mostly in the Hudson Valley north of New York City. Maine reported 130,000, Massachusetts 100,000, Vermont 25,000 and New Jersey 11,000. Heavy snow closed a 30-mile stretch of Interstate 84 in New York state, and state Police Sgt. Stephen Meehan called travel conditions throughout the mid-Hudson Valley “an absolute disaster.” Tuxedo, N.Y., reported 26 inches of snow, with more coming down. In New York City, 17 inches of snow had fallen before dawn and more was expected.
