Geminids meteor shower 2009 tonight: where & how to watch

It’s that time of the year again when we gaze at the night sky and look for a spectacle that comes at this time of the year. No, Virginia, not Santa Claus. It’s too early for him. Besides, what I’m referring to is something more spectacular that Santa Claus and his reindeer streaking through the night sky. This is something not associated with Christmas, and it’s something real!

It’s the Geminids meteor shower 2009. The 2009 Geminids meteor shower is due this week and the Geminids meteor shower (tonight) this year is more intense than before according to
scientists. For a brief backgrounder, here’s something from Wikipedia: “The Geminids are a meteor shower caused by an object named 3200 Phaethon, which is thought to be an extinct comet. The meteors from this shower can be seen in mid-December and usually peak around 12–14 of the month. The Geminid shower is thought to be intensifying every year and recent showers have seen 120–160 meteors per hour under optimal conditions. The Geminids were first observed only 150 years ago, much more recently than other showers such as the Perseids and Leonids.”

Meteor Shower tips 2009: How to watch the Geminids meteor shower 2009? Where to watch 2009 Geminids meteor shower? Astronomers believe the Geminids are increasing in intensity every year, yielding 120-160 meteors per hour during the shower. Astronomy magazine expects great conditions for viewing “100 ’shooting stars’ per hour.” People in China and Indonesia (and around the Southeast Asian region) have the orchestra seats for this year’s Geminid show, and might be able to see more than “300 meteors per hour.” Wow!

No need for a telescope to see the streaks shooting across the heavens. For optimal viewing, NASA pinpoints 12:10 a.m. EST/9:10 p.m. PST, and suggests going somewhere relatively dark, away from the city lights. A farm or the countryside are the best areas. For in the urnan areas, the suburbs will do. Keep your eyes roaming all areas of the sky to spot a meteor. Good luck!

watch LCROSS NASA moon bombing impact VIDEO REPLAY

“The Centaur rocket will strike first, transforming 2200 kg of mass and 10 billion joules of kinetic energy into a blinding flash of heat and light. Researchers expect the impact to throw up a plume of debris as high as 10 km. Close behind, the LCROSS mothership will photograph the collision for NASA TV and then fly right through the debris plume. Onboard spectrometers will analyze the sunlit plume for signs of water (H2O), water fragments (OH), salts, clays, hydrated minerals and assorted organic molecules.” That’s how NASA described how it would happen and that’s exactly how it did. However, for most of us observing on earth
through live streaming, we hardly saw a thing. Maybe, we needed to see it through a powerful telescope. Maybe they had a better view. The impact must have been so tiny compared to the size of the moon that cameras on board the orbiting satellite hardly captured it. Anyway, if you still want to watch the footage, here it is. The LCROSS NASA moon bombing impact video replay. Watch the video shot of the LCROSS moon impact and see if you can see a thing. Good luck. (In case you’re wondering, the video posted below IS already the one from NASA.)

watch live online: NASA moon bombing live stream video

All is set for one of the biggest missions for NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) this year as it prepares on a mission to discover whether its earlier findings of water on the moon is true. Earlier, three different space probes have found the chemical signature of water all over the moon. Thus by bombing the South pole, NASA hopes to expose what it expects to be huge deposits of ice hidden beneath the surface. The LCROSS (Lunar CRater Observing and Sensing Satellite) mission will send a missile to blast a hole in the lunar surface near the moon’s South pole. According to NASA, the impact will produce a
plume which an orbiting satellite will then analyze.

The Centaur rocket will strike first, transforming 2200 kg of mass and 10 billion joules of kinetic energy into a blinding flash of heat and light. Researchers expect the impact to throw up a plume of debris as high as 10 km.

Close behind, the LCROSS mothership will photograph the collision for NASA TV and then fly right through the debris plume. Onboard spectrometers will analyze the sunlit plume for signs of water (H2O), water fragments (OH), salts, clays, hydrated minerals and assorted organic molecules.

UPDATE: Watch the VIDEO REPLAY of the NASA moon bombing impact HERE.

Watch the NASA moon bombing live online streaming. The LCROSS NASA moon bombing streaming video is available through NASA TV or via the SLOOH telescope system. Or for those who want to view the event using their own telescopes, here is a guideline from the National Geographic. The impact takes place on Oct 9, 2009 at 4:30 a.m. US PDT (7:30 a.m. US EDT, 10:30pm AEDT).

Unlike most cosmic impacts, though, the LCROSS crashes will have an audience: Many amateur astronomers in the Americas will have their telescopes trained on the impact site. Even more can watch the LCROSS moon impact on the NASA TV Web site.

Enthusiasts on the U.S. East Coast should tune in, since their view of the LCROSS impact will be blocked by early morning sunlight, experts say.

Only North, Central, and South America will be facing the moon at the time of the LCROSS impact, allowing astronomers and stargazers there a rare view, experts say.

Anyone in these regions with at least a 10-inch (25.4-centimeter) telescope should be able to catch a glimpse of dusty debris—and maybe water vapor—billowing into the sunlight above the crater’s rim, astronomers say.

GM Chevy Volt gets 230 mpg: pictures, photos, specs, price

Move over, Toyota Prius. There’s a new star on the electric/hybrid car market, an automobile that promises to give 230 miles per gallon! Yup, you read it right, 230 mpg. GM’s Chevy Volt electric car has arrived. The Chevy Volt promises specifications and mpg that no current car in the market has. In fact, no one’s even close.

According to General Motors, their new rechargeable electric car should get 230 miles per gallon of gasoline in city driving, more
than four times the mileage of the current champion, the Toyota Prius. Here’s how it works: The car is powered by an electric motor and a battery pack with a 40-mile range. After consuming its electric charge (which can be recharged from a standard home outlet), a small internal combustion engine kicks in to generate electricity for a total range of 300 miles. With gas prices on the verge of making another jump because of growing demand and a more positive outlook on the US economy, this three-digit gas mileage is getting everyone interested.

The promised mpg is yet to be confirmed by the EPA which does the tests for the mileage posted on new car door stickers. But with the Toyota Prius, currently the most efficient car sold in the USA, only reaching 48 miles per gallon of gas, it is still head and shoulders above the competition even if the mpg is proven to be somewhat lower than promised.

For other details about the Chevy Volt, here are the specifications as well as videos and pictures.

Update: The Chevy Volt is expected to cost near $40,000 when launched commercially in 2011. But price is expected to drop with future generations. (Photos courtesy of GM)

Video: Fly with a water powered jet pack by Jet Levitation (JetLev)

Dreaming of a jet pack just like James Bond’s? Well, here is a water powered jet pack that will solve your problems. Plus, since it is water-powered you don’t have to worry about the rising price of gas.

A company called JetLev (Jet Levitation) has come up with this gadget that lets its user soar in the air to about thirty feet, and fly at 35 miles per hour. Best of all, it’s water powered. But there’s a catch. The jet pack is attached to a jet ski engine that pumps water into the jet pack thereby providing the thrust needed for the jet pack to defy gravity. This means that you
really can’t leave the water – a lake or the ocean – and you can’t soar through the air just like James Bond. And one more thing, it costs $130,000.00! Any takers?

For those of you seriously thinking of getting one, watch the video below for a shot demo.

iPhone 3.0 update download: when is iPhone 3.0 release time?

firmware download release timeWhen is the release time of the Apple iPhone 3.0 software update? What time can we download this latest firmware version? That’s what seems to be on every iPhone user’s mind. It has been announced that the iPhone 3.0 OS update will be available on the Apple site today but no definite time has been given. However, judging from past Apple download, updates are usually released around noon or thereabouts Pacific time in the United States
so it may be wise to have this in mind. The upgrade will be available simultaneously throughout the world. Moreover, users are reminded that download is available for free to existing iPhone users but it won’t be so for iPod Touch users. Upgrades for them will cost an additional $9.95.

A host of added features come with this upgrade, in time with the release of the iPhone 3G S in a few days time. Among these are the following: Recent Calls now shows more details (call length, etc); Ability to change/set “own number” (my number) in the SIM Card. Will be displayed in the Contacts list and iTunes, as well as possibly used for MMS identification.
