French Open upset specialist Robin Soderling struck again Tuesday, rallying past defending champion Federer in a rainy quarterfinal, 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 6-4. That ended Federer’s record streak of reaching the semifinals in 23 consecutive major events. The shocker was the second pulled off by Soderling in as many years at Roland Garros. He ended the reign of four-time champion Rafael Nadal in the fourth round a year ago, clearing the path for Federer to win his first French Open title and complete a career Grand Slam. Federer beat Soderling in last year’s final. Before Tuesday, Federer was 12-0 against the big-swinging Swede, winning 28 of their 30 sets. But Soderling’s recent improvement was evident as he controlled rallies from the baseline with his thunderous strokes. Federer found himself on the defensive and unable to move forward. Soderling saved a set point in the third when he won a frantic rally, then won the set to take the lead shortly after a rain delay of 75 minutes. The semifinal round Friday without Federer will be the first at a Grand Slam tournament since he lost in the third round of the 2004 French Open. It was a cold, damp afternoon, with occasional rain that had some spectators watching from under umbrellas, but the conditions didn’t seem to rob Soderling’s shots of any sting. He hit winners past Federer even standing two strides behind the baseline. The upset was all the more surprising because Federer was in control early.

Federer timed his run to perfection at the season’s first major, beating fifth-seeded Murray 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (11) in the Sunday night final to collect his fourth Australian Open title. A year ago, Federer was sobbing after a five-set loss to Rafael Nadal at Melbourne Park. He’d missed a chance to equal Pete Sampras’ record of 14 Grand Slams, compounding an emotional few weeks. Since then he finally won on clay at the French Open to complete a career Grand Slam of all four majors and equal Sampras’ record. Then he triumphed at Wimbledon for his 15th record title. He also became a father of twins. This time, it was Murray who was fighting tears after missing a chance to become the first British man since 1936 to win a major. Federer, however, enjoys making history. This was his 22nd Grand Slam final, his 18th in the last 19, and he compared this triumph with last year’s Wimbledon win. “This felt similar in a way, because all of a sudden it was over and it hit me,” he said. “It was very much a rollercoaster with the emotions.

The case is still pending with tennis authorities as of this writing. Though Williams has already been fined for her behavior, sanctions are still being deliberated upon. And, as the tournament drew to a close with the men’s final, another incident occurred, though it should be noted that this one was not as intense as Serena’s. A rare Roger Federer outburst (video below). Roger Federer cursed at the umpire after he noticed that his opponent was being allowed to challenge calls after
a longer period of time.

“I wasn’t allowed to challenge after two seconds. The guy takes like 10 every time,” Federer complained. But this was set aside by the umpire and the Swiss champion was told to keep quiet. “You have any rules? Don’t tell me to be quiet, ok? When I want to talk I’ll talk, all right…I don’t give a shit what he said, ok?”

Ok, I know this is quite tame compared to many other outbursts by other players but the reason this is making the news is because it involves Roger Federer, a players known to be cool and quiet on the court. Federer always lets his tennis do the talking but this time, frustration may have gotten the better of him

In the end, he mustered enough grit to beat Andy Roddick after four agonizing hours and
claimed his sixth All England championship. More importantly, Federer broke Pete Sampras’ Grand Slam record and established a new one, fifteen titles.

The match was torture of fans of either player. Though I said in an earlier post that I was rooting for Andy, I ended up rooting for Roger Federer. And that’s where the agony was for me. Andy Roddick dominated the match. His shots were sharp, his serves booming. He mixed his shots and never gave Federer a chance to beak his game until that fateful final service game that ended his dream. Roddick won the first set and was leading 6-2 in the second set tie break only to have the Swiss champion claw his way back and snatch the set from him. The third set ended in a tie break as well as both players matched each other’s shots and determination. But it was the fifth set that was the most taxing, ending in a score of 16-14.

At several points in the final set I thought Andy Roddick would win. He seemed more in control with his booming serves, ground strokes and volleys. Roger, on the other hand, seemed nervous, missing easy shots that used to be routine for him. At some point in the final games of the match I turned the television off. I couldn’t handle it. I couldn’t bear to watch Roger lose another epic battle like last year. I only went back to watching it after I knew the result online.

Andy Roddick was visibly distraught. He gave it his all but still came up short. However, Andy Roddick should realize that he amazed millions of us all over the world with what he showed us today on Center Court. There will be other opportunities for him. And with his new-found game, he will definitely win another Grand Slam title soon.

Roger Federer is the greatest tennis player of all time. There should be no question about it now. He has demonstrated not only his skill with this match. What we saw was the character of a real champion.

More than twelve hours after the epic battle, many fans of both players just can’t believe what happened, how it all unfolded.

Roger Federer won the Wimbledon 2009 men’s title by beating Andy Roddick in a classic match described by many as probably the best in recent years. It has even surpassed the epic fight of last year when Rafael Nadal denied Federer a record-setting sixth straight Wimbledon title.

Many of us feel sorry for Andy Roddick. He gave everything to win his second Grand Slam but still came up short. In fact, he dominated the game, denying the Swiss champion a break until the decider. But the true champion that Roger is hung in there and kept his composure, and that proved to be what gave him the win. His perseverance and determination paid off. If only both could be given the title that’s what should have been done, because Roddick’s performance was well worthy of it.

There were times when I couldn’t watch the Wimbledon 2009 men’s final coverage. The tension was too much for me especially during the fifth set tie-break. I turned the set off several times and only returned after I knew the results from online live blogs. It’s a good thing video replays / highlights are available. For those of you who didn’t watch this classic battle. here are a few videos I found online.

Who would have thought this would be the match up for Wimbledon 2009. A month ago, everyone would have said a Nadal vs Federer match would be likely. Two weeks ago, Murray replaced Nadal on the predictions when the latter pulled out due to injury. But Roddick? Wasn’t he written off as early as last year in any Grand Slam final?

Roger Federer again demonstrated his mastery of the game against Tommy Haas in the semis. The fluidity of movement was back, and so was
the magic touch. The win at Roland Garros must have given him the confidence to play like this again, like the old master that he was before he started losing to Rafael Nadal last year. After the first set with Haas, where Roger won in a tie break, everybody knew it was only a matter of time before the Swiss tennis ace would formally reserve his place on Sunday’s Center Court match up.

In contrast, many weren’t sure about Andy Roddick. Not even after he beat come-backing former champion Leyton Hewitt in the quarters. Everybody was expecting a Murray win. However, with his new coach, improved ground strokes and volleys, new-found determination and stamina, Andy Roddick showed everyone that he should not be written in Grand Slams yet. He was 2-6 against the Briton in their match ups so far but he match Murray’s every point, every rally, every winner. He won the big points, and held his ground in the tie breaks. The British crowd was stunned as he beat their hope of a men’s singles crown last won by a Briton in 1936. Roddick was stunned as well, and as he took his bow he even seemed apologetic. But deep inside he knew his hard work has paid off.

Roger Federer wins Wimbledon 2009, 15th Grand Slam record
Wimbledon 2009 men’s final video replay / highlights

I have always been a Roger Federer. I cried when he cried and jumped for joy in his many triumphs. But if he loses on Sunday in the 2009 Wimbledon final I won’t feel bad. I may even cheer for Roddick during the game, for I know that he deserves to win another Grand Slam. And a Wimbledon title will more than make up for his disappointments in the past.

The LIVE coverage from the All England Club starts Monday is what promises to be another exciting two-week championship.

The biggest Grand Slam of the season starts in a few hours with a field of tennis players each seeking to bring home the most-coveted trophy in the sport. Who will win this year? The women’s side, though lacking a dominant force the past seasons, has a roster of talented players – some seeking to add to their past Wimbledon glory and others seeking
their first. The Williams sisters look strong as ever with Venus seeking to prolong her reign as the queen of the All England Club with a possible sixth (and third consecutive) crown. Younger sister Serena looks as fierce as ever, ready to avenge her loss to older sister Venus last year. Svetlana Kuznetsova, on the other hand, would just love to win here too after conquering the clay courts of Roland Garros barely two weeks ago. And then there’s Dinara Safina, the current world number 1 and winless in Grand Slam singles as of yet despite several finals appearances. Will Safina win this year? There only one way top find out and that’s by watching the live television (TV) coverage of Wimbledon 2009. The Australian TV schedule is posted below.

Other Wimbledon 2009 posts of interest:

Rafael Nadal withdraws / quits due to injury
2009 Wimbledon draw
Wimbledon 2009 TV schedule USA
Wimbledon TV schedule 2009 UK
2009 Wimbledon television schedule AUSTRALIA
Wimbledon 2009 CANADA television schedule

Wimbledon fashion 2009: Federer’s military jacket vs Muray’s outfit
Wimbledon 2009 LIVE online streaming
Andy Murray in Fred perry retro outfits for Wimbledon (photos)

It’s the men’s side which become more exciting for Wimbledon 2009. Will Roger Federer win Wimbledon and eclipse Pete Sampras’ record for the most Grand Slam wins? After winning the French Open earlier, the Swiss ace seems to be on another gear as he tries to recoup his All England glory doused by Rafael Nadal last year. With Nadal out due to injury, Federer is the top sentimental favorite. But British hope Andy Murray seems all set to fight for the crown last won by British man in 1936.

The competition starts Monday. Check you TV schedules for the live coverahe from the All England Club.

The Federer vs Soderling live stream from Roland Garros can be seen through justin.tv (webcast below).

Will the Swiss tennis ace finally win French Open title, the crown that has long been missing from his collection of honors in his quest for tennis greatness? Will Federer finally complete a rare career Grand Slam (only five players have achieved this so far) and equal Pete Sampras’ record of 14 major titles? The odds weigh heavily in his favor as he faces
surprise finalist and Nadal conqueror Robin Soderling. But will the Swede spoil the party?

As much as Federer already has done, one French Open championship could forever alter the Swiss star’s place in history. No one knows that better than Andre Agassi, whose 1999 French Open title made him the fifth—and most recent — man with a career Grand Slam, changing the way he and others view his career. “Every surface, every condition, demands something different from you, and also rewards you differently, as well, from the physical challenges that exist, to the mental challenges. It’s highlighted by the fact that it doesn’t get done too often,” Agassi said. Indeed, with all that the Swiss tennis ace has achieved, winning the French Open will only solidify his claim as the greatest.

Federer was ranked No. 1 for a record 237 consecutive weeks, until Nadal overtook him last season. He won Wimbledon (played on grass) and the U.S. Open (hard courts) five consecutive times apiece, and the Australian Open (hard courts) three times. All that’s left is to add “French Open champion” to his resume.

Almost everyone is pulling for Federer to get his first. They all know how near he’s come, losing to Spain’s Rafael Nadal in the past three French Open finals and the 2005 semifinals. Let’s watch the French Open 2009 live online and root for Roger Federer as he makes a date with destiny.
