Tayong Dalawa finally ends; a hint of Tayong Dalawa book 2?

Tayong Dalawa has finally ended, airing its one-hour finale a few hours ago to deliver its last hurrah on Philippine television. Or is it? in the last scene, Rosanna Roces enters the Garcia house with Enchong Dee (?) in tow and introduces him as another long lost brother of the two Garcia brother, Dave and JR. If that does not smell like a sequel is coming, I don’t know what the point is in showing it.

Do I want a Tayong Dalawa book 2 as a sequel to the long-running Tayong Dalawa? No.
Tayong Dalawa is undoubtedly one of the best drama series ever to hit Philippine television but I don’t think I want another dose of it. At least, not in the near future. I’ve grown tired of the series and only watched in the last two weeks eager to find out how it would end. But my interest in Tayong Dalawa waned towards the middle of the “season”.

When it began, it had such promise. With a stellar cast of newcomers and some of Philippine entertainment’s most talented actors and actresses, it had an engaging plot and delivered with crisp scenes and a fast-paced story, unlike typical television (and movie) dramas that must have had Pong Pagong in the writing team. And viewer reaction was great. It was a commercial success. Everywhere I went, everybody seemed to be talking about the series. But then the network must have wanted to stretch this commercial success for a longer time and stretch the series for all its worth in advertising income. The result – weeks and months of never-ending conflicts and fights. It seemed that all the characters did was fight or cry, or both. The fight between the two Garcia families was all there was for months – shouting, fighting, threats, more shouts and more fights. And that’s when I lost interest. What’s even more surprising was this: my mom and aunts lost interest as well. According to them, Tayong Dalawa became too monotonous. And that’s coming from true blue telenovela fans!

Now, with the end of the story comes a hint that a sequel is coming. I honestly am not looking forward to it. But if they really want a sequel, please stick to the time frame and original story as written, because stretching a series for the sake of profit sucks. What they did during the beginning of the series was great – the pace, story – and that’s what they should do with a sequel if ever.

Pacquiao vs Cotto details and Manny Pacquiao’s nickname

Frankly, I was surprised to see this on top of Google’s search charts. I thought almost all boxing fans know this already. Anyway, here it is. Manny Pacquiao’s nickname – people are actually searching for the nickname of Manny Pacquiao. Well, it’s Pacman. This is his boxing nickname – a combination of the first syllables of his last name and his first name. Don’t know who gave it to him but I guess it was one of the sports commentators in the Philippines where he first rose to boxing stardom. Secondly, “Manny” is already a nickname as his real
name is Emmanuel Dapidran Pacquiao.

Meanwhile, Pacman will be facing Manuel Cotto in his next fight. This may be Manny’s last before he retires and dedicates himself to Philippine politics. Elections are in May 2010 so I guess that leaves him enough time to campaign after the fight, win or lose. Here are the details of the fight from Wikipedia:

On November 14, Pacquiao is slated to face WBO welterweight champion Miguel Ángel Cotto of Puerto Rico, at the MGM Grand Las Vegas. Even before Ricky Hatton’s fight against Paulie Malignaggi last year, Top Rank promoter Bob Arum stated his desire for Pacquiao to fight Cotto. Pacquiao then gave Arum the go signal to arrange the fight after Cotto won a hard-fought decision against Joshua Clottey at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Meanwhile, current WBA welterweight champion “Sugar” Shane Mosley tried to lure Pacquiao to fight him. Mosley even offered Pacquiao for a fight at junior welterweight (140 pounds), Pacquiao’s weight class as of the moment. However, after unsuccessful attempts, Mosley shifted his focus to a fight against WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto.

Among the details that were agreed upon for the Pacquiao-Cotto fight were the weight (both camps agreed to the 145-pound catchweight) and the purse (Pacquiao will get the 65% share of PPV buys, as compared to Cotto’s 35% share). As of the moment, it is still not clear whether Cotto’s WBO welterweight belt will be at stake, although WBO has ranked Pacquiao as the #1 contender for Cotto’s welterweight belt.

Kris Aquino’s touching speech during Cory’s funeral (video)

Former Philippine president Cory Aquino’s funeral yesterday will be remembered for so many things: the turn out of people who joined and watched the funeral procession from the manila Cathedral to the Manila Memorial Park; the sacrifice and dedication people showed by walking the 22 kilometer distance in more than eight hours despite the rains; the outpouring of love through music during and after the requiem mass; the presence of politicos from both sides of the political fence, setting aside their differences all for Cory Aquino. But most of all, it will be remembered for Kris Aquino’s poignant speech to her mom, Cory,
as she said goodbye in behalf of her family, and thanked everybody who supported them in this time of grief.

Kris Aquino has always been one of the more vocal and articulate ones of the Aquino children. And being in show business helped in making her confident and comfortable in front of people. In her speech at their mother’s funeral, we heard how Cory is not as a mother of the nation and an icon of democracy. With words coming from one of her children, we saw Cory as a loving and protective mother who nurtured a family in spite of the trials that they faced and in spite of her responsibilities as a leader of the nation.

I Have Fallen in Love lyrics: Ninoy’s poem, song to Cory Aquino

I Have Fallen in Love (with the Same Woman Three Times) was a poem Ninoy Aquino wrote for his wife Corazon “Cory” Aquino when the former was a political detainee. It speaks of Ninoy’s love and admiration for his wife and how he has continually fallen in love with her through their nineteen years (at the time) of marriage. Very few people knew about this poem. Only family members were privy to its contents even after Ninoy’s assassination in 1983.

But according to composer Jose Mari Chan, he was approached by good friend Cecille
Guidote Alvarez sometime in 1987 to put music to the poem. What he read was a beautiful and heartfelt tribute from a man to his wife that inspired him to compose its melody in a very short span of time.

I Have Fallen in Love with the Same Woman Three Times is included Jose Mari Chan’s album Constant Change and has recently been recorded by Christian Bautista to be included in a tribute album currently being compiled by Kris Aquino for her mother. Posted below are the lyrics to the song.

Chocolate Hills, Philippines: a worthy world wonder (photos)

First of all, let me clarify this: the hills are not made of chocolate! The Chocolate Hills in the Philippines‘ Bohol province are a geological wonder, with experts still in disagreement as to how they were formed. Totaling more than a thousand mounds (1,776 to be exact) in an area of more than fifty square kilometers, the famous Chocolate Hills are the number one tourist attraction in the area with travelers coming from all over the world to personally see the sight that has amazed them in pictures and videos.

“Most people who first see pictures of this landscape can hardly believe that these hills are not a man-made artifact. However, this idea is quickly abandoned, as the effort would surely surpass the construction of the pyramids in Egypt,” according to photographer Salvador Andre. “There is no natural formation like them in the world. From a distance, they look like half a ball grown out of the ground. The molehill-shaped and almost uniformly sized hills dot the landscape with green and brown.”

As to their origin, there are several theories how the hills were formed although one accepted suggestion is what’s written in tourist information material: The unique land form known as the Chocolate Hills of Bohol was formed ages ago by the uplift of coral deposits and the action of rain water and erosion.

I have not seen the hill up close, but friends who have marvel at the sight. “Nothing like it,” is what they usually say. but why are they called “chocolate hills”? Well, the natural vegetation of the mounds are grass and other grassy species. In the rainy months, they are green. But most of the year in the dry months, they turn brown. And the sight is especially striking at sunset when the hills turn dark golden brown. And that’s why they are called chocolate hills.

Lea Salonga’s National Anthem: Martin Nievera, listen to this

I found a clip of Lea Salonga’s version of the Philippine National Anthem on YouTube. It is posted below. I think Martin Nievera should listen to it. I think he should have listened to it before he sang in Las Vegas because this is the way it should have been done. If he only did, Martin Nievera would not be in deep s*** right now because of his rendition.

The Philippine National Anthem isn’t like an ordinary song that should be tweaked or re-arranged to suit a singer’s preference or objective. There should only be one version and that’s the ~~original~~ official version. It is not a song that should be changed to demonstrate one’s creativity or vocal prowess, or to gain international recognition. It should be sung with only one purpose,
and that is to honor the motherland. Nothing else. I think singers of the anthem in the future should keep this in mind.

Here are some online comments about the issue that I agree with:

The point is Martin had overdone our anthem, although he sang it well and its nice but still it is not official. Martin and the other well-known filipino singers can influence the next generation, what will happen if our children will sing it in a slow intro then end it in a high note. Its a big deal preserving or national heritage.

The original time signature that Julian Felipe composed not written is in 2/4, slower than the present, but because it was arrange for brass bands and not for singing it was latter change to 4/4 when the lyrics written by Jose Palma was added. there are several revisions with the original lyrics until the government made the official anthem in which we are now singing.

Lea for being the superstar that she did not succumb to self-glorification just as Martin did… it’s so obvious, he wanted to be noticed…

The Pinoy Who Invented the Water-Powered Car

An Filipino engineer named Daniel Dingle, who used to work for NASA, has developed a car that uses plain tap water and/or sea water for fuel. The technology utilizes a mini-reactor in the car that splits the water molecule into hydrogen & oxygen, with hydrogen being burned off as fuel. The emission released out of the exhaust is clean pure water vapor or water – absolutely no pollution! In fact, it cleans the air. He now has 6 cars running on water, the first of which was driven in 1969, over 30 years ago. He also has various other water-powered inventions – all are patent-pending.

This is great news especially to motorists of today who are burdened with the increasing cost of fuel. But the question is, if this water-powered car technology was available thirty years ago, why hasn’t it been manufactured and marketed?

Mr. Dingle says he has been turned down by every agency he sent his invention to, especially the local ones. The local government technology arm has even branded his water-powered car invention as a hoax many years ago. However, if you ask me, science has nothing to do with this constant rejection. It is politics and money, the same story for many other inventions in the past that have threatened to sever our dependence on oil.

Word has it that Mr. Daniel Dingle has finally found an international partner to develop his water-powered car. Let’s just hope they do it soon and they do it fast because the world’s back is breaking from the soaring price of oil.
