Wired Gets Hands On With Google’s Nexus One at CES 2010

Here’s Wired taking a look at Google’s first foray into the smartphone business, the Nexus One. The new phone sports a 5MP camera, voice control, has haptic feedback and will be available unlocked for $529, or also available for $179 with a 2 year contract with T-Mobile.
The device is manufactured by Taiwan’s HTC Corporation, and became available on January 5, 2010. Nexus One has hardware and software multi-touch capability but is not enabled in the U.S. version by default, unlike an iPhone, due to Apple patent.
Lake Champlain Bridge demolition (aka Crown Pointe) VIDEO

Also known as the Crown Pointe Bridge, the Lake Champlain Bridge was a vehicular bridge that crossed Lake Champlain between Crown Point, New York, and Chimney Point, Vermont. It was one of only two bridges that connected New York to Vermont by crossing Lake Champlain; all other transport across the lake between the two states are by ferry. It was opened to traffic in 1929 as a toll bridge; the tolls were removed in 1987. The bridge was closed due to safety concerns in October 2009.
On November 9, 2009, officials in Vermont and New York announced that the bridge was beyond repair and would have to be demolished. The 80-year-old bridge was closed October 16 when engineers deemed it wasn’t safe because of severe erosion to its concrete piers.
A controlled explosion was recommended to take down the bridge. Removal of the existing bridge was accomplished by explosive demolition, and was originally scheduled for December 23, 2009. It was later moved to December 28 as a result of the formation of ice on Lake Champlain and cold weather in the area. Both factors led to delays in installing the necessary explosives for demolition. Manchester United’s injury burden is beginning to lighten, with the news that Nemanja Vidic, Rafael Da Silva and Wes Brown could be set to return to action. Though the injury problems continue for Manchester United, this next match is hopefully lighter than the previous one and the Reds may have a relatively easier time to get the three points they need to close in on struggling Chelsea, and maintain their lead over Arsenal and Aston Villa nipping at their heels. And with Hull City’s off court problems of late, United are even more highly favored to win this one.

By this time, the merry making is in full swing and Christmas gifts have been given and unwrapped. Many are tired from all the partying, booze and, of course, the last minute shopping. It’s the same thing every year. But do you think the Christmas shopping season is over? Definitely not! For many, it has only just begun with more discounts and bargains on the horizon with the traditional day after-Christmas sales. In fact, some people may have been waiting for after-Christmas sales for the bulk of their shopping. With the financial crisis plunging us deeper into economic trouble, this is quite understandable, and practical. Who
says you have to can only give gifts before Christmas? The Christmas season runs through New Year and gift-giving is always welcome anytime during the season.
Experts are predicting even bigger discounts for after-Christmas sales this year. Christmas shopping figures before December 25 all over the world have been rather tame, even disappointing, compared to previous years – a consequence of tight budgets and a world in recession. The economy has been in a recession since December 2007, and tighter credit and more layoffs continue to squeeze consumer budgets. Not even big discounts and bargains could sway some shoppers during pre-Christmas sales. As a result, prices are expected to drop further to sway shoppers to spend.
In the United States, this year’s day-after-Christmas sales is expected to rival those of Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving that kicks off the shopping season and can put retailers into money-making territory for the year. For the first time, J.C. Penney is opening at 5:30 AM on December 26 and will take orders for wake-up calls on jcp.com. Various other offers from retailers have been advertised online in the hope of enticing shoppers to shop more.
2009 Day-after-Christmas sales offers/day-after-Christmas deals
Aside from JC Penney’s aggressive campaign, here are other offers this season:
Bath & Body Works wants you to hold back some cash because its semi-annual sale, with 75 percent off, starts Monday.
Ikea is promoting its post-Christmas discounts of 20 percent to 60 percent off.
Sears will offer up to 75% off on electronics and 50% off on Craftsman tool storage chests. Kmart will add 40% off to clearance items, already marked down 30%.
Toys R Us circulars in newspapers Thursday will bill the day after Christmas as the “biggest” after-holiday sale with deals including an $81.99 race car set for $19.99 and table games, originally $239.99, for $131.99.
More discounts will surely be announced soon. Be on the lookout for bigger bargains as retailers try to outdo each other to get shoppers’ attentions. This year’s after-Christmas sales may end up as the biggest shopping day of the year.
A word or caution: Though discounts and big bargains will certainly be great for everyone, buy only what you need. No matter how cheap an item may be, it will still turn out to be an expensive buy if you don’t nee it and end up not using it at all.

American Airlines Flight 331 (AA 331) crash lands in Jamaica

An American Airlines plane flying from Miami has overshot the runway in Kingston. According to reports, the plane overshot the runway but came to a complete stop several meters away with passengers able to get off the plane immediately. However, there are reported injuries. According to some reports, around 40 passengers were injured, some seriously. No fatalities have been reported so far.

Many of those on board were holiday makers out to enjoy the warmer weather in the Caribbean this Christmas break.

Tracking Santa Claus has been an annual tradition for millions of kids worldwide. But did you know how this all started? In 1955, a Colorado Springs Sears store ran an ad encouraging kids to call Santa Claus on a special telephone hotline. Due to a printing error, the phone number that was printed was
the hotline for the Director of Operations at the Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD). Colonel Harry Shoup took the first Santa call on Christmas Eve of 1955 from a six-year old boy who began reciting his Christmas list. Shoup didn’t find the call funny, but after realizing the mistake that occurred, he instructed his staff to give Santa’s position to any child who called in.
Years later, the governments of the United States and Canada combined their respective national domestic air defenses into the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), but the tradition continued. Now major media outlets as well as children call in to inquire on Santa’s location. NORAD relies on volunteers to help make Santa tracking possible. Many employees at Cheyenne Mountain and Peterson Air Force Base spend part of their Christmas Eve with their families and friends at NORAD’s Santa Tracking Operations Center in order to answer phones and provide Santa updates to thousands of callers. About 800 service members and their families volunteer, and shift run from 2 AM MST December 24 to 2 AM Christmas morning.
In 1997, Canadian Major Jamie Robertson took over the program and expanded it to the Web where corporation-donated services have given the tradition global accessibility. In 2004, NORAD received more than 35,000 e-mails, 55,000 calls and 912 million hits on the Santa-tracking website from 181 countries. In 2005, more than 500 volunteers answered questions. In 2006 half a million calls and over 12,500 e-mails were handled from 210 territories. The site now gets well over 1 billion hits.

Car Seat Recall: Dorel Juvenile Group Inc. car seats recalled

Another product recall has been announced Friday as a baby product manufacturer recalled about 447,000 of its infant car seat carriers, including some branded with Eddie Bauer and Disney logos. This was due to reports that the car seat carrying handle can come loose and cause injuries to the baby.
The government announced the recall amid reports that babies have sustained injuries after falling off the car seat when the handles become unhinged. The government said
consumers should immediately stop using the seat’s carrying handle. The bolts that attach the handle to the seat can loosen, causing the handle to separate and creating a fall hazard for babies.

Geminids meteor shower 2009 tonight: where & how to watch

It’s that time of the year again when we gaze at the night sky and look for a spectacle that comes at this time of the year. No, Virginia, not Santa Claus. It’s too early for him. Besides, what I’m referring to is something more spectacular that Santa Claus and his reindeer streaking through the night sky. This is something not associated with Christmas, and it’s something real!
It’s the Geminids meteor shower 2009. The 2009 Geminids meteor shower is due this week and the Geminids meteor shower (tonight) this year is more intense than before according to
scientists. For a brief backgrounder, here’s something from Wikipedia: “The Geminids are a meteor shower caused by an object named 3200 Phaethon, which is thought to be an extinct comet. The meteors from this shower can be seen in mid-December and usually peak around 12–14 of the month. The Geminid shower is thought to be intensifying every year and recent showers have seen 120–160 meteors per hour under optimal conditions. The Geminids were first observed only 150 years ago, much more recently than other showers such as the Perseids and Leonids.”

No need for a telescope to see the streaks shooting across the heavens. For optimal viewing, NASA pinpoints 12:10 a.m. EST/9:10 p.m. PST, and suggests going somewhere relatively dark, away from the city lights. A farm or the countryside are the best areas. For in the urnan areas, the suburbs will do. Keep your eyes roaming all areas of the sky to spot a meteor. Good luck!
