US Open 2009 leaderboard / latest golf scores

Looking for the latest 2009 US Open golf results and scores / leaderboard? You’ll be surprised with the outcome so far as some of the big names can hardly be found even in the top ten. With round one play suspended yesterday due to rain, many of the golfers, including the marquee groupings, have just completed the first round.

Just listen to this: as of this writing Phil Mickelson is tied for eleventh, last year’s runner up Rocco Mediate is tied for fifth and Tiger Woods is tied for 101st. Yup, that’s right, 101st! Looks like the famed
Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York is showing the golfers who’s boss.

Payne Stewart plane crash: remembering a great golfer (video)

On the eve of the 2009 US Open Championship, the world of golf remembers Payne Stewart who died in a plane crash 10 years ago. Stewart was a two-time winner and one of the most-loved who have played the sport. He won the US Open in 1991 and 1999, with his later win fraught with drama as he sank amazing birdies to win the crown. Sadly, he would die tragically a few months later.

Payne Stewart died in a plane crash that stunned the golfing world. Fresh from a US Open win and preparing for the year-ending The Tour
Championship, his private jet lost cabin pressure in mid-flight, killing all those on board from lack of oxygen. The plane flew on autopilot until it ran out of fuel and plunged to the ground in South Dakota.

The five other people aboard the plane included Stewart’s agents Robert Fraley and Van Ardan, and pilots Michael Kling and Stephanie Bellegarrigue, along with Bruce Borland, a highly-regarded golf architect with the Jack Nicklaus golf course design company.
