Getting Rid of Fire Ants | iNewsCatcher

The sting of a fire ant may be one of the most painful of any insect, a sensation similar to what one feels when burned by fire — hence the name fire ant. I should know for I have been bitten more than once while walking through our extended garden. I accidentally stepped on their mound while I was busy talking on my mobile phone one early evening and, before I knew it, they were on attack mode aiming for my feet. They were furious! Lucky, I only had a few bites since the insect repellent I applied against mosquitoes worked against them as well. Whew, thank God for that!
I immediately went into the house, took a can of bug spray and drenched their mound with it. I decimated the colony (or so I thought) only to find them in another area of the garden several days later. I later realized that fireants are hardy insects, able to retreat to their underground shelter for protection, and fight another day. So if you think you can lick such a
problem, think again. Look for a professional to do it for you or else face the possibility of a second (or even third) attack by these nasty stingers.
