Last night the House of Representatives was debating a bill to spend about $7 billion on healthcare monitoring for rescue workers and residents involved in 9-11 health fallout in lower Manhattan. The Democrats brought it to the floor under a rule requiring a two-thirds majority, because that same rule also prevents the addition of “mischief” amendments from the minority, which the Republicans were planning on adding, evidently excluding undocumented immigrants, thus forcing a tough vote that would have made many centrist Democrats vote no lest they open themselves up to charges that they want to spend “your” tax money on a bunch of illegals.So the bill got 225 votes, with 159 against, but since 255 is short of two-thirds, it failed. The Democrats were 243-4 in support, and the GOP 12-155 against.This made Democrat Anthony Weiner of Brooklyn pretty unhappy. One of the big differences between the two parties is a really simple thing: passion. House Republicans late Thursday were able to corral enough votes to defeat a bill that would have provided up to $7.4 billion in aid to those sickened by toxins resulting from the 9/11 attacks. In the process, they set off a host of fiery speeches and denunciations from their Democratic colleagues and produced a veritable YouTube moment from Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y), whose district includes many of the affected. At the heart of the debate was a procedural maneuver made by Democrats to suspend the rules before consideration of the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act. The move allowed leadership to block potential GOP amendments to the measure (there was worry that Republicans would attach something overtly partisan in hopes that it could pass on the otherwise widely-popular measure). It also meant that the party needed a two-thirds majority vote.

In the report, Weiner charged that Goldline was using the hyperbolic — and at times fear-inducing — speech of its conservative business partners to encourage customers to buy the precious metal at highly-inflated prices. In his investigation into the business dealings of Goldline, Weiner found that many of the company’s products “could be found much cheaper on similar precious coin seller’s websites.” Their business model, the report alleges, encourages them to “aggressively push the sale of numismatic coins (collector) over bullion (pure gold) because the company has the largest profit margin on them and the sales representatives make the largest commission.” “Goldline rips off consumers, uses misleading and possibly illegal sales tactics, and deliberately manipulates public fears of an impending government takeover – this is a trifecta of terrible business practices,” said Weiner, according to Politico, whose original coverage of the Beck-Goldline connection spurred Weiner to launch the investigation. “This industry goes beyond Goldline, but the Goldline circle has been particularly cynical in its cultivation of these conservative commentators,” Weiner continued. “There are two industries that are intertwined here in this cynical play: the media industry and the online gold industry, and there is a lot of blame to go around.” Weiner has also announced plans to introduce legislation to force transparency in the gold industry.
