Mexico Earthquake 2010: 6.9 Quake Hits Baja California, Shakes Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES — A strong earthquake south of the U.S.-Mexico border Sunday swayed high-rises in downtown Los Angeles and San Diego and was felt across Southern California and Arizona, but there were no immediate reports of major damage. The 6.9 magnitude quake struck at 3:40 p.m. in Baja California, Mexico, about 19 miles southeast of Mexicali, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The area was hit by magnitude-3.0 quakes all week. The quake was felt as far north as Santa Barbara, USGS seismologist Susan Potter said. Strong shaking was reported in the Coachella Valley and Riverside, Calif. The earthquake rattled buildings on the west side of Los Angeles and in the San Fernando Valley, interrupting Easter dinners. Chandeliers swayed and wine jiggled in glasses. In Los Angeles, the city fire department went on “earthquake status,” and some stalled elevators were reported.
Mexico Earthquake 2010: 7.2 Quake Hits Baja California, Shakes Los Angeles
SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO LOS ANGELES (Associated Press) – A powerful earthquake in Baja California rocked the U.S.-Mexico border region Sunday, collapsing a parking structure south of the border and causing power outages in both countries as it sent out seismic waves felt from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and Arizona. The 7.2-magnitude quake struck at 3:40 p.m. about 19 miles southeast of Mexicali, a bustling commerce center on the Mexican side of the border where trucks carrying goods cross into California. More than 900,000 people live in the greater Mexicali area. It was the largest earthquake in the region in nearly 18 years and was followed by aftershocks or distant “triggered” earthquakes on both sides of the border, said U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Lucy Jones. A multistory parking structure collapsed at the Mexicali city hall but no one was injured, said Baja California state Civil Protection Director Alfredo Escobedo. Other early reports indicated only minor damage, but communication in the region more than 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles is often slow. “I grabbed my children and said, ‘Let’s go outside, hurry, hurry!’” said Elizabeth Alvarez, 54, who said the quake hit as she was getting ready to leave her house with her children in an eastern Tijuana neighborhood, across the border from San Diego. Hundreds of people fled Tijuana’s beach fearing a tsunami, said Capt. Juan Manuel Hernandez, chief of aquatic rescue at the Tijuana fire department. Tsunami experts quickly reported that no tsunami was expected along the West Coast, and Hernandez said the beach filled back up with people within an hour. Tijuana Fire Chief Rafael Carillo said firefighters were rescuing people trapped in an elevator at the Ticuan Hotel in downtown Tijuana, but mostly were responding to reports of fallen cables and minor damage to buildings. The Crowne Plaza hotel in Mexicali had minor damage — burst pipes and broken windows — but no on was hurt, said receptionist Juan Carlos Fernandez. “There was a little bit of panic,” Fernandez said.

Los Angeles School Year Shortened In Teachers Deal
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles teachers union says it has reached a deal with the school district that would shorten the school year by at least five days, as officials cope with a $640 million budget deficit. United Teachers Los Angeles spokeswoman Marla Eby says under the agreement reached Saturday, teachers will take five unpaid furlough days this year and seven next year, saving the nation’s largest school district $180 million. The deal would allow schools to maintain class sizes and save more than 2,000 jobs, including those of 284 librarians, nurses and counselors threatened with layoffs this summer. The agreement still has to be approved by members of the teacher’s union..

Los Angeles Earthquake: 4.4 Quake Hits Near Pico Rivera
LOS ANGELES — A pre-dawn earthquake shook Southern California on Tuesday, startling residents from their sleep. The magnitude-4.4 quake, centered about 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, struck shortly after 4 a.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. There were no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage. Though the quake was considered small, it was felt over a large swath of Southern California. Online citizen reports gathered by the USGS show the temblor was felt as far west as the coast. Los Angeles County Fire Department supervisor Andre Gougis said the agency was surveying the area, but had received no immediate reports of damage. The quake hit not far from the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake, a magnitude 5.9 quake that killed eight people and caused more than $350 million in damage. The latest jolt was not likely to inflict the same damage. “I’m sure people would have felt it, but this is not an earthquake that will be damaging,” said USGS geophysicist Amy Vaughan..
