Palin Does Standup Comedy On Leno’s Tonight Show (VIDEO)
BURBANK, Calif. (AP)– Sarah Palin says she’s going to play Tina Fey in an upcoming Las Vegas show. Just kidding. The former Republican vice presidential nominee turned into a standup comic on Jay Leno’s “Tonight Show” Tuesday, dropping one-liners about the White House, Congress and Fey — the “Saturday Night Live” star known for her impression of the former Alaska governor. Palin told Leno’s audience she planned to speak at a gun-rights convention: “Be there or else,” she warned them. She said Alaska is different from California. In Los Angeles, “when people have a frozen look on their face, I find out it’s Botox.” And she’s happy she’s not vice president. “I would not know what to do with all that free time,” she quipped. In remarks taped for broadcast later Tuesday, Palin said the White House health care plan reminds her of acrobatic flips done by snowboard champion Shaun White. And she joked that it’s so cold in Alaska it’s “5 degrees below Congress’ approval rating.” She had some fun at her own expense, too. Palin became fodder for late-night TV jokes when she was spotted looking at notes written on her palm during a speech in Nashville. She said she picked up the habit years ago from her father, a teacher, and “I’m going to keep doing it.” Earlier, she flashed her palm, which had “Good evening and welcome to ‘The Tonight Show’” written on it. Jay Leno’s ‘Tonight Show’ Return Rates With Viewers
NEW YORK — Nielsen says Jay Leno got a warm welcome from viewers with his return on Monday to “The Tonight Show.” Preliminary Nielsen Co. ratings from 56 metered markets across the nation give NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno” a 5.4 rating and a 14 percent share of the viewing audience. That compares with a 3.4 rating and 8 share for ABC’s “Nightline,” and a 3.0 rating and 8 share for CBS’ “Late Show with David Letterman.” After 17 years, Leno left “Tonight” last May in the hands of new host Conan O’Brien. O’Brien’s first show ratings last spring were better than Leno’s Monday night return. But O’Brien couldn’t hang onto the viewers, leading to his departure. In the meantime, Leno starred in a weeknight NBC prime-time hour that was canceled for low ratings. More on Tonight Show.

Letterman Books Mitt Romney Against Sarah Palin On ‘Tonight Show’
As Nikki Finke writes, there’s now a late night GOP war. Mitt Romney will be appearing on David Letterman’s “Late Show” Tuesday night, directly against Sarah Palin on the “Tonight Show.” Palin and Romney are both speculated to be considering bids for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. Palin’s visit to Jay Leno’s first week back on the NBC late night program was reported earlier this week and is expect to deliver ratings for the beleaguered Leno. Letterman’s schedule for the rest of the week includes Bill Murray on Monday, NBC men Jerry Seinfeld and Tom Brokaw on Wednesday, Tom Hanks on Thursday and Matt Damon on Friday. Jay Leno may be returning to the “Tonight Show,” but he may not have his sidekick with him. “Extra” says it has confirmed a report that bandleader Kevin Eubanks will be leaving the “Tonight Show.” Eubanks “wanted a change,” according to a source, “Extra” reports. Los Angeles Radio station K-EARTH 101’s Lisa Stanley reported the news first. OK! magazine says former “Hootie & the Blowfish” frontman Darius Rucker is a rumored replacement. Eubanks joined Leno on the “Tonight Show” in 1992. “Extra” cites one source saying that Eubanks will appear on Leno’s March 1 return to the “Tonight Show.” UPDATE: The Wrap’s Brent Lang reports that Eubanks is merely “mulling a departure” from the show but “will be onstage” for the March 1 return. “An NBC spokesperson confirmed that Eubanks would be on the show through the month of March and indefinitely after that,” Lang reported. NEW YORK — Certainly Jay Leno would love to wake up to find that the last six months was just a nightmare. That way, he’d be preparing another “Tonight” show monologue, not going on the national shrink’s sofa across from Oprah Winfrey, as he was Thursday. He wouldn’t have seen a photo of himself doctored to look battered on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, symbolizing television’s biggest flop ever. And he wouldn’t have heard the rough jokes with the serious subtext that he had sandbagged Conan O’Brien. NBC is hoping that it all goes away, too. The network won’t know until March 1 whether he’s been permanently damaged or not by the disastrous decision to try him in prime time and the clumsy way he recovered his old job. March 1 is when Leno returns to late night, opposite David Letterman on CBS. “He’s going to be competitive and I think his audience is going to come back over time,” says Jeff Gaspin, NBC Universal Entertainment chairman. Except for the Winfrey interview, Leno will do little talking after his 10 p.m. EST show ends with the onset of the Olympics.
