Hulu Losing ‘Daily Show,’ ‘Colbert Report’
NEW YORK — The popular video Web site Hulu is losing two of its most popular offerings: “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report.” Hulu announced Tuesday that Comedy Central was pulling its shows from the site beginning March 10. Both “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report consistently rank among Hulu’s most watched programs. Comedy Central, which is owned by Viacom Inc., was a relatively late arrival to Hulu, which is co-owned by NBC Universal, Fox Entertainment Group and the Walt Disney Co. (which owns ABC). When “Colbert” and “The Daily Show” were added in June 2008, some technology blogs such as Techcrunch.com said it signified Hulu’s arrival as the pre-eminent provider of TV programming on the Web. In a blog post on Hulu, Andy Forssell, senior vice president of content and distribution at Hulu, offered a “fond farewell” to the Comedy Central shows, lamenting their exit. “In the past 21 months, we’ve had very strong results for both Hulu and Comedy Central, in terms of the views and revenue we’ve generated,” said Forssell. “After a series of discussions with the team at Comedy Central, though, we ultimately were unable to secure the rights to extend these shows for a much longer period of time.” But Forssell also said that Hulu and Comedy Central continue to talk about “a number of opportunities” and that he was confident Hulu will be working with them “in multiple ways in the future.” Comedy Central issued a statement that said its agreement with Hulu had “concluded,” but the channel also suggested an amicable parting. “We had a great experience with Hulu, and we hope to work with its team again in the future,” said Comedy Central. Viacom hasn’t been shy about offering its programming on Web sites it owns. Full episodes of “The Daily Show” and “Colbert” are still offered by Comedy Central on each show’s respective Web site.

Kevin Smith continues to insist he is NOT too fat to fly Southwest Air. The airline removed him from a flight Saturday after deeming him a safety risk, even though he says he was seated with the armrests down and seat belt buckled. Smith says the airline made a mistake in trying to board him as a standby passenger then giving him the boot. The Southwest rep who called Smith to apologize for his mistreatment, a woman named Linda, admitted that the situation was clumsily handled and that Smith was removed because they were trying to find room for a fatter passenger who had already purchased two seats. Linda wrote on Southwest’s blog: Now, 48 hours later, after talking to many involved, we know there were several things going on that day and that our Employees were doing their best to get his flight out safely and on time, including finding seats for everyone and trying to accommodate standby passengers. The Captain did not single Kevin out to be removed, but he did ask that the boarding be completed quickly.

Newt Gingrich tried on Wednesday to brush off the glaring gaffe he made this week when he insisted that the Bush administration was right to read shoe bomber Richard Reid his Miranda rights because Reid was an American citizen. But in doing so, the former GOP House Speaker only made the hole deeper. In a post on his Twitter page, Gingrich explained that when he made the Reid comment to the Daily Show’s Jon Stewart his reference was actually Jose Padilla. Reid, after all, is a British citizen. Padilla is American. But Gingrich wasn’t done there. In a dig at the Obama White House, he added to the tail end of his tweet: “Treating terrorists like criminals wrong no matter who is Pres.” That’s a standard GOP talking point, and yet when President Bush moved the Padilla case from a military setting to the criminal system, it was Gingrich who came to his defense despite conservative howls, a Democratic source points out.
