Bill White Wins Democratic Primary For Texas Governor’s Race
AUSTIN, Texas (AP)- Former Houston Mayor Bill White defeated six other candidates Tuesday to become the Democratic nominee for Texas governor, giving the party its best hope in years at winning the chief executive post. White, a well-funded businessman who made a name for himself with his city’s response to the Hurricane Katrina evacuation, will face the winner of the Republican primary in the November general election. White had nearly 76 percent of the vote with a handful of precincts reporting to defeat wealthy Houston hair-care magnate Farouk Shami and five other lesser-known candidates. White said he didn’t feel at a disadvantage with so much attention paid to the Republicans and spent the time listening to voters. He aired television ads introducing himself to a statewide audience and generally kept his campaign on a positive path. Perry and Hutchison, meanwhile, frequently traded barbs. Perry pushed an anti-Washington theme, casting Hutchinson as part of a bid-spending crowd in the nation’s capital. Hutchison accused Perry of becoming arrogant, allowing cronies to invade state government and ignoring looming state problems. Republicans have held the governorship since George W. Bush took over in 1995 after defeating Democrat Ann Richards. Perry ascended to governor from lieutenant governor in December 2000, when Bush resigned to become president, and has held the office ever since. Democrats have been looking for an avenue back into statewide power, and many see White as that chance with his money to spend on a big race and his power base in Houston, the state’s largest city. Businessman Tom Schieffer dropped out of the Democratic race for governor last fall and threw his support behind White, who switched from running for U.S.

The Obama administration has launched a final push to get one of the president’s signature education reform initiatives, lashing out in unusually strong terms at the lobbying effort that threatens its passage. Taking aim at Sallie Mae, the largest student lender in the country and a driving force behind the lobbying effort, Education Secretary Arne Duncan on Tuesday accused the company of using taxpayer funds to lobby and advertise, and cast its executives as white-collar millionaires uninterested in serious education reform. “Sallie Mae executives have paid themselves hundreds of millions of dollars in the last decade while teachers, nurses, and scientists — the backbone of the new economy — face crushing debt because of runaway college tuition costs,” Duncan said. In an interview with the Huffington Post, Duncan called the administration’s plans to overhaul the student loan program by ending government subsidies for private lenders “a once-in a generation, maybe once-in-a lifetime” opportunity that Congress would be foolish to let slip away. But slip away it may. Despite its common-sense appeal and its passage by the House of Representatives, the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act — which would eliminate the role that private industry plays in originating student loans — has gotten a tough reception in the Senate, in large part because private lenders have spent a boatload of money protecting their turf. Last week, The New York Times reported that Sallie Mae had launched an intense lobbying effort to push the Senate’s hand, including “sit-downs with lawmakers, town-hall-style meetings and petition drives to plead their case and stay in business.” Over the past year, the company spent more than $4 million lobbying Congress, a review of campaign finance records showed.

WASHINGTON — The White House called for a “simple up-or-down” vote on health care legislation Sunday as Speaker Nancy Pelosi appealed to House Democrats to get behind President Barack Obama’s chief domestic priority even it if threatens their political careers. In voicing support for a simple majority vote, White House health reform director Nancy-Ann DeParle signaled Obama’s intention to push the Democratic-crafted bill under Senate rules that would overcome GOP stalling tactics. Republicans unanimously oppose the Democratic proposals. Without GOP support, Obama’s only chance of emerging with a policy and political victory is to bypass the bipartisanship he promoted during his televised seven-hour health care summit Thursday. “We’re not talking about changing any rules here,” DeParle said. “All the president’s talking about is: Do we need to address this problem and does it make sense to have a simple, up-or-down vote on whether or not we want to fix these problems–” DeParle was optimistic that the president would have the votes to pass the massive bill. But none of legislation’s advocates who spoke on Sunday indicated that those votes were in hand. “I think we will get to that point where we will have the votes,” predicted Sen. Robert Menendez, D-N.J., a member of the Senate Democratic leadership. “I believe that we will pass health care reform this spring.” In a sober call to arms, Pelosi said lawmakers sometimes must enact policies that, even if unpopular at the moment, will help the public.
