Details are sketchy, but if the sinking of Cheonan was intentional, it creates a serious crisis for the Koreas’ neighbours and the USLate last night, the South Korean patrol ship Cheonan suffered an explosion and sank. As of midnight Korean time, 58 of the 104 member crew of the Cheonan had been rescued. The cause of the sinking of the Cheonan, a 1,300 ton missile corvette, is as of yet unknown. However, the South Korean cabinet has convened an emergency meeting to deal with the situation, and some reports suggest that a North Korean torpedo may have struck the Cheonan. Details remain sketchy, and at this point it is unclear whether Cheonan sank as the result of an attack, or because of an accidental explosion. Another South Korean patrol ship reportedly fired on North Korean targets in the area.

At least half of the 104 crew members were rescued according to an official with the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Seoul.The South Korean broadcaster SBS said that many sailors on the stricken ship were feared dead.”For now, it is not certain whether North Korea is related” to the incident, Kim Eun-hye, a spokeswoman for the South Korean president, Lee Myung-bak, said. “President Lee ordered the military to do its best to rescue the soldiers.”"Finding the truth (behind the incident) is important, but saving our soldiers is more important,” the president was quoted as saying.The South Korean navy was quoted as saying in a statement: “The ship appears to have begun sinking after an explosion at the rear of the ship. We have been unable to find the exact cause of the incident as of this moment.”North Korea in recent weeks has said it was bolstering its defences in response to joint South Korean-US military drills that were held this month.Christian Le Miere, a senior analyst in Asia for Jane’s country risk, said it was as yet unclear whether it was an open engagement or accident.The ship was likely to be one of South Korea’s frigates or corvettes. The area, around the disputed Yellow Sea maritime border, the Northern Limit Line, is one of “particular tension” and there have been three previous engagements, in 1999, 2002 and 2009, though these involved much smaller patrol boats, Le Miere said.South Korea’s naval capacity was much larger than that of its northern neighbour, with nine frigates and 28 corvettes compared to North Korea capacity of “maybe six corvettes and three frigates”.”It is very rare for a ship of this size to be involved in a clash in the west.
