James Cameron OK With Oscars Mocking
The Oscar-nominated director told me this exclusively tonight at the Global Green party at Avalon. Cameron said he wasn’t aware that a proposed Avatar sketch involving Ben Stiller and Sacha Baron Cohen had been cut from the show, presumably to avoid upsetting the director. “I don’t know anything about that…I don’t produce the Oscars. If they want to poke fun at Avatar Sunday, that’s OK by me,” said Cameron. More on The Oscars.
Barbara Walters: Final Oscars Special Is Best
NEW YORK — Barbara Walters says her last Oscars television special will be her best. Walters will sit down with actresses Sandra Bullock and Mo’Nique, both nominated for Academy Awards. Bullock is up for Best Actress for “The Blind Side,” and Mo’Nique is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for “Precious.” Walters said she believes both will win. By bidding adieu, Walters is ending a 29-year-old tradition of talking to celebrities on Hollywood’s biggest night. It wasn’t until 1988, though, that she began interviewing nominees. “For the first seven years we were not allowed to interview any of the nominees because the (Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences) thought it would interfere with their Oscar special,” Walters said. That year she sat down with Glenn Close and Cher, who were contenders for Best Actress. Cher ended up taking the award for her role in “Moonstruck.” While Walters, 80, is known for getting stars to open up and often tear up on camera, she says the celebrity interview has become less special in recent years and many stars are overexposed. “I don’t find it harder to interview celebrities now,” Walters said. “I find it harder to interview a celebrity who hasn’t been all over the place. And now everybody’s a celebrity if that’s the word you’re using.” Just because Walters is stopping her Oscars special doesn’t mean she’s done with TV. “I am not retiring!” she insists.

Early Wednesday morning, State Sen. Roy Ashburn (R-Calif.) was pulled over and arrested for drunk driving. Sources report that Ashburn — a fierce opponent of gay rights — was driving drunk after leaving a gay nightclub; when the officer stopped the state-issued vehicle, there was an unidentified man in the passenger seat of the car. Ashburn has issued an apology for the incident: “I am deeply sorry for my actions and offer no excuse for my poor judgment. I accept complete responsibility for my conduct and am prepared to accept the consequences for what I did. Produced by HuffPost’s Eyes & Ears Citizen Journalism Unit When Barack Obama was elected, many people wanted to shout “racism no longer exists!” from the rooftops. Even last week following President Obama’s State of the Union Address–MSNBC pundit Chris Matthews proclaimed “It’s interesting: he is post-racial, by all appearances. I forgot he was black tonight for an hour.” While most of us cringed at his statement, some Chicago-based organizations decided that an honest conversation about where Chicagoans stand on racial issues was in order. On Saturday, Vocalo, a nonprofit radio station, joined Mindhearted, Inc., a diversity education organization, for a “Real Talk On Race” just blocks from Obama’s Kenwood home. Organizers invited the community to the Little Black Pearl Art and Design Center to discuss whether or not we as a society are really “over” race. The consensus– Not so much. Vocalo host Tom Herman teamed up with Mindhearted President Kara Burrell Wright and planned the event as an opportunity for people to become “more aware of their interactions with people of other races, and increase awareness of [their] own experience,” Herman told the Huffington Post. “We wanted to create a safe space for things that are challenging,” Wright said.
