Harold Ford: No One Wants To Draft Him For Senate
One of the important things to note about Harold Ford’s quasi-maybe-this-is-happening run for the Senate seat in New York currently occupied by Kirsten Gillibrand is that it is one of the most uncalled-for candidacies in recent memory. Ford basically decided one day, out of the blue, to announce, “Hey, maybe I am a contender in this Senate race, for some reason!” On that score, Alex Pareene made a good point, yesterday: Harold Ford’s problem was that he announced his candidacy himself, then claimed to be answering the call of desperate people yearning for his leadership in these trying times. It sounded phony, especially because the only people he could name behind the supposed drumbeat were Bloomberg cronies and Democratic fundraisers of the Upper East Side. Working the happy hour crowd at the Regency is not quite the Eugene Debs write-in campaign. Politico’s Ben Smith noted today that, somewhat retroactively, a “Draft Ford” website went up online. On that site, visitors are asked to “SIGN THE PETITION” to “Demand a strong, independent voice for New York.” As you might expect, things are not going well. As of now, the petition has attracted only 23 signatures.

NEW YORK — Former Tennessee congressman Harold Ford Jr. said Monday he won’t challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in this fall’s Democratic primary because he doesn’t want to divide and weaken the party. In a New York Times op-ed posted online for Tuesday’s editions, Ford said he believed he could have won but didn’t want to risk a bitter primary that could help a Republican take the seat. “I’ve examined this race in every possible way,” Ford wrote, “and I keep returning to the same fundamental conclusion: If I run, the likely result would be a brutal and highly negative Democratic primary – a primary where the winner emerges weakened and the Republican strengthened.” Ford moved to New York after losing the 2006 U.S. Senate race in Tennessee, taking a job with Bank of America Merrill Lynch. He had spent the past seven weeks traveling the state and meeting with voters, Democratic dignitaries and elected officials to gauge support for a potential campaign. Many in the Democratic establishment backing Gillibrand, including the White House and New York Sen. Charles Schumer, sought to discourage Ford from running.

Over the course of the interview segment, Colbert grilled Ford on his flip-flops on abortion rights and gay marriage, before making fun of his now-famous helicopter trip to Staten Island. “You appear to be willing to change your positions to appeal to a New York audience. How do you respond to that compliment– Because it is a compliment,” Colbert said. Ford’s response– To compliment Colbert on his Grammy win! This was the moment where I realized, “My God! He is actually going to try to kiss up to a satiric character!” On substance, Ford went on to maintain that he always strictly upheld a pro-choice stance.

Harold Ford is looking to assert some middle class bona fides with the New Yorkers who would propel his out-of-state candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat there. His latest effort involves this interview with the New York Post’s Cindy Adams, in which Ford attempts to connect with the common folk of New York, living in the naked city, as paupers: “Now I’ve taken a 45-day unpaid leave of absence from my job at Merrill Lynch. It’s not right to draw a salary when I’m out every day campaigning. Fortunately, I’ve still got a little NYU teaching job and some MSNBC, so for a while I think I can put food on the table.” Let’s hope that little NYU teaching thingy and “some MSNBC” and, you know, being the scion of a prominent political family is enough to tide Ford over, lest we see him hangin’ in a chow line! Still, one has to ask: who is paying for Ford’s pedicures– The LiveStrong Foundation– Also, you just have to love how he describes his “public service” activities to Cindy Adams, News Corp. employee: I’ve always looked for ways to contribute.
