Jacob Meister Drops Out Of Senate Race, Endorses Alexi Giannoulias
Jacob Meister officially left the U.S. Senate race on Sunday, endorsing Illinois State Treasurer and primary front-runner Alexi Giannoulias. Meister was the first openly gay Senate candidate in Illinois history. Giannoulias has been a strong supporter of LGBT rights throughout the campaign, and Meister’s decision to support him was not unrelated. Chicago Pride quotes Meister saying, “As I make way for Alexi to continue this fight, I am grateful to have a new ally in the struggle for equality for all Americans, and together we can deliver those rights to those who have waited too long for their arrival.” While he officially withdrew on Sunday, Meister has been all but out of the race for some time now, polling a distant fourth to Giannoulias, David Hoffman and Cheryle Jackson. A recent Tribune poll gave Meister only one percent of the vote. Nonetheless, Meister’s spokeswoman Karen Craven told Clout Street that Meister has brought important issues to the table, and that Giannoulias will be adopting many of his policy initiatives on job creation and equal rights for members of the LGBT community..

David Hoffman Attacks Alexi Giannoulias For Rezko Ties (VIDEO)
With just over a week before Election Day, David Hoffman has launched a new attack ad, going after the front-runner in the Democratic race for U.S. Senate. The ad comes as new polling shows Alexi Giannoulias with a double-digit lead over rivals Hoffman and Cheryle Jackson. Hoffman did, however, show signs of life in the poll, gaining by far the biggest slice of undecided voters since the last poll in early December. In the 30-second spot, Hoffman plays up Giannoulias’s ties to Tony Rezko, the fundraiser who was convicted for fraud and money-laundering felonies during his corrupted affiliation with the Blagojevich administration. The ad asserts that Broadway Bank, owned by the Giannoulias family, lent over $1 million to Rezko. Hoffman has been campaigning as a reform-minded outsider, and has garnered a number of endorsements from major newspapers in recent weeks for precisely that reason. Watch the ad:.

After law school, Mr. Giannoulias went to work full-time at the bank in 2002. He quickly became a senior loan officer and then a vice president. Whether merely by coincidence, or because of the ambition and aggressiveness of its well-pedigreed new junior executive, the bank’s profile changed sharply between then and when Mr. Giannoulias resigned after winning the race for state treasurer in November 2006. According to a review of the bank’s annual filings with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation from 2001 through Sept. 30, 2009, the bank plunged into the sort of lending that has caused bank crises across the country: construction and development loans.
