Louk Sorensen claims first Irish grand slam win in open era at Australian Open
¢ ‘It’s the biggest achievement of my career so far’¢ Sorensen makes history with first-round victoryIt may be stretching things a little too far to suggest that Louk Sorensen’s victory here in the first round of the men’s singles today will have them dancing in the streets of Dublin. The 25-year-old can go unnoticed in the country’s capital but there is no doubt that his 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei will go down as a historic moment for Irish tennis.Though Matt Doyle represented Ireland with aplomb in the Davis Cup in the 1980s and reached the last 16 of the US Open in 1982, he was American-born and, according to officials, played the grand-slam events under an American flag. Ireland almost had two men in the main draw but Conor Niland was beaten in the last round of qualifying so the last Irishman to even play a grand-slam match was Sorensen’s father, Sean, at Wimbledon in 1980 and Louk’s win was the first by an Irishman at a grand-slam event in the open era. “I’m feeling great,” the world No284 said. “It’s the biggest achievement of my career so far, but let’s just see how it goes in the next round,” he said.Doyle became a national hero in Ireland when he beat Eliot Teltscher in a Davis Cup World Group tie in 1983 against a United States team that included John McEnroe, then the Wimbledon champion. Sorensen’s father also played in that match and is now the captain of Ireland’s Davis Cup team, something that may prove to be even more significant come July, for Ireland and Britain could find themselves playing each other, depending on the results of their first-round matches in March.
How Prince William won over Australia and New Zealand
Many thousands turned out to see Prince William on his first official tour ” and he did not disappoint themIn the end the lure of celebrity proved just too much. The arrival of the diffident 27-year-old Old Etonian, who might conceivably one day become their monarch, provoked sneers in Australia before he touched down on Tuesday. But by last night he had been transformed from Willy the Wombat into ” acccording to the tabloid Herald Sun ” a Dinkum Aussie Larrikin. You could go a long way through the Outback to find someone less like a larrikin (which usually translates as a bit of a hoodlum), but that’s what the presence of royalty can do for you. Many thousands turned out to see the prince here in Australia and in New Zealand earlier in the week. Outside the new supreme court building in Wellington, which William had been sent to open on behalf of his grandmother, people greeted him with cheers and worried about the effect of the sun on his bald spot. Maoris beamed with pleasure that the grandson of the Great White Heron had come amongst them.In Sydney, Aborigines who spend their lives crammed into a dismal slum area called the Block came out in their thousands to welcome a young man as different from them as it is possible to imagine.
