One team needs this win to keep its World Cup 2010 hopes alive while the other is already assured of a South Africa appearance but still wants to end the qualifying as the top finisher in the region.

It’s a must win game for Costa Rica. Costa Rica needs to win to capture the region’s third and final automatic World Cup spot. They are currently third in the standings with 15 points, two ahead of Honduras, which plays at already eliminated El Salvador. The fourth-place team goes to a home-and-home playoff next month against the No. 5 finisher in South America:
Uruguay, Ecuador or Argentina. As such, the last round of eliminations are crucial for some of the teams.

For the United States, it is still seeking a win here as it wants to finish first in North and Central American and Caribbean qualifying for the second straight time ahead of rival Mexico (Mexico plays Trinidad and Tobago in this round). But while the USA team will is the favored team to win, doubts about its performance here abound with the baggage the team is currently carrying. Team forward Charlie Davies had several broken bones and a lacerated bladder after a one-vehicle accident last night and is listed in serious condition in the hospital.

The tragedy may be too hard to overcome for the USA soccer team and this bodes well for the Costa Ricans. We will have to see how the Americans will fare in this round.
