It’s almost here. The host city of the 2016 Summer Olympics will be announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from Copenhagen in a matter of hours. the last-minute lobbying is in full swing as the committee members make up their mind on who to support. And who to swing their vote to in case their favored city is eliminated first. That how the 2016 Olympic voting will go. According to the IOC’s voting rules, they will eliminate the city with the fewest votes in successive rounds of secret balloting until one city
receives a majority. (watch LIVE STREAM of the announcement through the link below)

Olympic bidder cities Tokyo and Madrid earned the top technical scores during the application phase. However, recent games held in Asia (2008 Beijing Olympics) and Europe (2004 Athens Games) could hinder their applications. As such, the bidders from the Americas are deemed to be more favorable. If the Summer Games return to the Americas (for the first time in 20 years), Chicago and Rio de Janeiro have an edge; Rio would become the first South American city to host the Olympics.

When one city is eliminated first, Tokyo for example, which city will its supporters vote for in the second round. This is what’s crucial in the voting process. The swing votes may hold the key to an Olympic city’s win. In the 2012 Olympic voting, Paris was deemed as the favorite. But somewhere along the voting process, it was edged by London. This may happen again this year. Chicago is deemed as the front runner. But Rio is not far behind with sentiment rising for the Olympics to go to South America for the first time. But don’t count out Madrid yet. It may still pull a surprise despite the 2012 Olympics to be hosted by its neighbor.
