The singer revealed in his historic 1993 interview that the discoloration resulted from a skin disease called vitiligo. At that time the interview was aired, and even a couple of years later, the disease was relatively unknown. It caused quite some controversy, and doubts. And the abuse he allegedly received at the hands of his father was horrible, saying later that he often cried from loneliness.
