Who will the new US Open 2009 women’s singles champion be? Will it be the teenager aiming for her first Grand Slam win, or will it be the former world number one and former champions on a comeback trail after raising a family (shades of Evonne Goolagong Cawley in the 70’s).

The sentimental favorite is, of course, Kim Clijsters of Belgium because of her seemingly effortless comeback to the top of the women’s tennis heap. Her feat so far is admirable because very few have come back from semi-retirement to land
a Grand Slam final on their first try. Moreoever, with Serena Williams’ antics in yesterday’s match still an issue, her defeat of the reigning queen of tennis and her meltdown in the end just made Kim Clijsters’ feat even more admirable.

On the other side of the net is Caroline Wozniacki. Ranked number 9 in the world this year, she is another unexpected finalist – the beneficiary of upsets in half of the draw. But that’s not saying that she isn’t a worthy finalist because she is. However, in tennis just like in any other sport, skill and luck work hand in hand.

I’m going for Clijster in this one. Firstly, she has the Grand Slam experience. She has been in similar situations before and that’s mighty important in a Grand Slam final. Secondly, she has more power than her opponent. On the other hand, if the match goes to three sets, Wozniacki might have a chance given Clijsters’ fitness coming from semi-retirement.

UPDATE: Clijsters made history Sunday night, capping a comeback from two years out of tennis to become the first unseeded woman to win the Open—and the first mom to win a major since 1980—with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over No. 9 Caroline Wozniacki.
