Another major golf championship is here. The 2009 British Open Golf Championship, otherwise known as The Open, will tee off at Turnberry in a few hours with a host of the biggest names in the sport each trying to capture the oldest golf championship in the world.

Tiger Woods will be returning to the 2009 British Open after an absence of one year due to injury. But he will be facing stiff competition from other golfing greats one of which is defending champion Padraig Harrington, winner of the last two British Opens. Between the two of them, Woods and Harrington have
won the last four championships so expect a good battle in the next four days.

Phil Mickelson has elected to skip this year’s British Open, opting to stay with his wife who is battling breast cancer and his mother who was likewise diagnosed with the disease a few weeks ago. But despite his absence, there are other worthy challengers. The British Open has also produced some surprise winners in the past and that may happen again this year. Who knows, the Claret Jug may just end up in the arms of another unexpected winner.
