There was plenty of smoke at Universal Sudios because of the fire that destroyed some of its sets, and there was smoke too at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards, but it was a different kind. Seth Rogan and James Franco pretended to smoke marijuana (a very apt intro if I may say so myself) before handing out the popcorn trophy for new category of best summer movie so far to Robert Downey Jr.

But as they pulled out the “marijuana,” the cameras pulled away to a wide angle, and stayed that way until the two left the stage. “Thanks fellas,” a puzzled Robert Downey Jr. said, “for that intoxicating introduction,” as he accepted the award. Franco later told media that the skit was MTV’s idea and someone from the network decided at the last minute that they couldn’t go through with it —- but it was too late to make the change.
